Inhaling harmful dust poses a health risk during mining and construction activities. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent the inhalation of harmful dust among workers at a mining company and a construction firm in El Oro, Ecuador. A descriptive, cross-sectional, mixed-methods study was conducted between January and February 2026. The study population consisted of 50 dust-exposed workers: 29 from the mining sector and 21 from construction. Methodological triangulation was performed using surveys, interviews, and direct observation. Quantitative analysis involved descriptive statistics and the chi-square test (p < 0.05). All workers (100%) reported habitually using masks, and 94% stated they received protective equipment (96.6% in mining). However, they reported issues such as discomfort (42%), low effectiveness (44%), and a lack of pre-employment (52%) and regular (50%) medical check-ups. Significant differences were documented regarding the prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption among miners (20.7% and 55.2%, respectively). Triangulation revealed discrepancies between reported knowledge and observed practice; intermittent mask use was noted due to discomfort, heat, and breathing difficulties. Furthermore, deficiencies were found in medical surveillance and training programs. Although the reported availability and use of respiratory protection are high, challenges remain regarding correct usage, supervision, and medical surveillance, particularly in the mining sector. Programs to strengthen occupational health surveillance need to be implemented.
