Promotion of knowledge in first aid for the prevention and management of community accidents.

First aid is an essential initial intervention for preserving life, preventing complications, and reducing the severity of injuries in accidents or sudden events. The objective of this study was to determine the level of first aid knowledge in an urban community in the province of El Oro and to identify the relationship between prior training and knowledge level. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 48 adults selected using non-probability convenience sampling. Data were collected using a structured and validated questionnaire with acceptable reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.76), which assessed knowledge of bleeding, burns, asphyxiation, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The results showed a predominance of medium and low levels of knowledge. The main difficulties were identified in pediatric CPR protocols, where 56% presented a low level, and in general first aid knowledge, with a predominance of medium level (75%). Prior training was significantly related to a higher level of knowledge (p = 0.036). The trained participants achieved a higher proportion of advanced skills (31.3%) compared to those who did not receive training (6.3%). It is concluded that knowledge gaps exist that may limit community response to emergencies, therefore requiring the implementation of regular programs for theoretical and practical training, simulation, and skills assessment in first aid.
