Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between quality of life and its determining factors in older adults with chronic metabolic diseases residing in the Pasaje canton, El Oro province (objective). The study employed a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional cohort design, conducted in a municipal dining hall in the Pasaje canton between October 2025 and March 2026. The sample consisted of 80 older adults selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Two surveys were used: the WHOQOL-BREF, which assesses quality of life, and FANTÁSTICO, used to identify determining factors (methodology). The majority of older adults were between 70 and 79 years old and male; the most prevalent pathologies were hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Medium to high levels of perceived quality of life were observed in areas related to personal safety, social relationships, and the physical environment. Economic limitations, poor sleep habits, poor stress management, and inadequate eating habits were identified (results). Therefore, the quality of life is disrupted by social, emotional and lifestyle factors in this population group that lead to one or more chronic metabolic diseases, making the creation of health, prevention and promotion strategies for personal care extremely important to alleviate general well-being.
