Abstract

Cognitive impairment in older adults is a major public health concern due to its impact on autonomy, functional capacity, and quality of life. Therefore, cognitive stimulation represents an effective non-pharmacological strategy for preserving cognitive functions and promoting healthy aging. The objective of this study was to determine the cognitive status of older adults attending the Autonomous Decentralized Government of Caña Quemada Parish through the application of standardized assessment instruments and to evaluate cognitive stimulation strategies aimed at strengthening their cognitive abilities and improving their quality of life. A quantitative, descriptive study was conducted with a sample of 26 older adults selected through non-probability convenience sampling. The assessment instruments used were the Pfeiffer Questionnaire and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the data were analyzed using SPSS software. The results showed that, according to the Pfeiffer Questionnaire, 58% of the participants had normal cognitive status, 23% had mild cognitive impairment, 15% had moderate cognitive impairment, and 4% had severe cognitive impairment. According to the MMSE, 80.8% had normal cognitive status, 11.5% showed suspected pathological cognitive impairment, and 7.7% presented cognitive impairment, with no cases of dementia identified. In conclusion, most participants maintained an adequate cognitive status, highlighting the importance of implementing and sustaining cognitive stimulation programs and nursing strategies that promote early detection, prevent cognitive decline, and support healthy aging.
